Pseudopregnancy (false pregnancy) in dogs/cats

Pseudopregnancy, also known as false pregnancy, is a phenomenon that can occur in unsterilized bitches / cats. Pseudopregnancy is caused by hormonal fluctuations in diestrus, a phase of the estrous cycle in which there is a drop in progesterone concentration and an increase in prolactin concentration. In terms of days, the symptoms of false pregnancy in dogs usually appear between 7 and 10 weeks after estrus or after heat.

During pseudopregnancy, the bitch may show symptoms similar to those of a real pregnancy such as:

• – Swelling of the breasts with milky secretion
• – Loss of appetite
• – Preparation of a “den” where to give birth to puppies
• – Tendency to bring toys especially if they make sounds, stuffed animals even shoes in the “den”.

Pseudopregnancy usually does not pose a serious risk to the health of the animal. However, it can create discomfort especially behavioral and if prolonged stimulation of the breast tissue can lead to mastitis even of serious entity.
